"the department is working on a major overhaul of the existing

department said that all information dated prior to Feb. 2001 will be

all medical response vehicles to carry a quick response medical

the Michigan-based Food Anaphylaxis Education organization, allergic
reactions to food must be treated immediately by injecting the person
suffering from the reaction with epinephrine, or EpiPen. “There are
areas of this state now where a hospital is over a half hour away and
the only emergency response unit available does not carry
epinephrine,” Gieleghem said. “For people there, an anaphylaxic

New Show on Cable Channel PAX - The
PAX network is bringing us a new TV show, "Sue Thomas: F.
B. Eye," premiering Sunday, October
13 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., CST. "Sue
Thomas: F. B.
Eye" is inspired by a true story about
a young deaf woman whose amazing lip reading abilities land her
a job with the FBI. The real
Sue Thomas, deaf from the age of 18 months,
overcame significant obstacles to work for the FBI. She has
since gone on to seminary and a
career as a motivational speaker and author.
Deanne Bray is deaf and, like Sue Thomas,
was encouraged by her parents to read lips,
speak and sign. While pursuing an acting career,
Deanne has also been teaching science
and math to deaf and hearing-impaired children and is
about to complete her masters in
Education. Deanne won the role of Sue Thomas after auditioning with
numerous other
actresses, both hearing and deaf. She is a rare talent and a terrific
woman who is truly living the
American dream. Taken from an article found in the

Autism Legislation Introduced -
Rep.
Christopher Smith (R-NJ) has introduced the Teacher Education for
Autistic Children Act of 2002 - TEACH Act of 2002 (H.R. 4728). This
legislation would authorize additional appropriations for training of
special education teachers with expertise in autism spectrum disorders
(ASD); and (2) improving results for children with ASD, under the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It would also
amend the Internal Revenue Code to establish a refundable tax credit
for education and training relating to ASD, and amend IDEA to require
local educational agencies receiving IDEA assistance to report on
autism early intervention activities. As of mid-June, the bill had 39
cosponsors (25 Democrats, 13 Republicans, 1 Independent).
From the Council for
Children with Behavioral Disorders, July
2002.

Question:
My child rides the bus to school. Is
there something in the law that addresses what a 'reasonable' length
of time is for a child with special needs to be on a bus? From your
experience, how can a parent effectively deal with transportation
issues, including being reimbursed for providing our own
transportation?

Teachers for Granholm
- The MI Federation
of Teachers announced its endorsement in the general election
of Democratic gubernatorial
candidate Granholm, the current attorney general. The union,
which represents 34,000 members including 15,000 in the
Detroit Public School district, said
Granholm's education plan, including emphasis on preschool and
smaller class sizes, is preferable to that of Republican
Posthumus, who officials criticized as a supporter of school
vouchers and expanded charter schools. It had not made an
endorsement in the primary, when the state's largest teachers'
union, the MI Education Association,
threw its backing to Granholm.

officials and consumer, family and advocacy representatives.
The panel's recommendations will be forwarded to DCH Director
James K. Haveman, Jr. for final

Early
Childhood » The Promise of Preschool -
For parents, educators, and lawmakers, the promise of preschool is
that children will enter school ready to
learn, but, in reality, the results are
mixed. In America, most parents have to pay for preschool, and
quality varies. In France, as in most
European countries, high quality preschool is
a universal right guaranteed to all
children.
