School Lockdown Training Bills Move To Floor

The Michigan House Education Committee moved legislation that would require schools to perform two lockdown drills every school year.

HB 4460, sponsored by Rep. William Van Regenmorter (R-Georgetown Twp.), would replace two of the eight required fire drills with lockdown planning and add to the two tornado drills schools are required to perform.

During lockdown training, kids are taught to find a shelter-in-place. The training is supposed to keep kids safe during school violence, a chemical spill or threat from outside the school.

"As times change we must develop new strategies to ensure the safety of our students and teachers," Van Regenmorter said. "Solid plans need to be in place for all eventualities and requiring lockdown drills will keep those in schools prepared for any circumstance."
