In July of 2003,
the Michigan Department of Community Health received a two-year,
federal Maternal and Child Health grant that will fund the
development of a strategic action plan for early childhood
services and supports in Michigan.
The Great Start Strategic Action and Planning project is eager
to gain your input and involvement in the planning activities
for early childhood services and supports for all Michigan
children and their families. The project is committed to
including as many Michigan citizens as possible in building
consensus about what all young children and their families need
and how we might best meet those needs. We hope you will
consider our invitation to join in these exciting efforts on
behalf of young children and their families and make sure that
all young children have a great start!
Enrolling in the Great Start Listserv & Participating in
Strategic Action and Planning Activities
Great Start has created a Web site for current information about
the Great Start strategic action and planning project. When you
visit the Web site you can sign up for the Great Start listserv.
The Great Start listserv provides immediate notification when
new information is placed on the Web site.
The listserv provides information on how citizens can join in
consensus building and strategic planning activities for Great
Start. Opportunities will be available to participate in person
or via email, depending on the type of consensus building and
strategic planning that is taking place.
The first opportunity for participation has been the Community
Conversations that were recently held in communities across
Michigan. These conversations are bringing concerned people
together to talk about their needs and desires for comprehensive
early childhood services and supports. Many additional
opportunities for participation will be available over the next
two years on topics like: Creating a vision for early childhood
supports and services in Michigan; assessing the current status
of early childhood supports and services for parents and
children; reviewing evidence-based practices, in use in Michigan
or other parts of the country to decide what would work best in
Michigan; writing a plan that will help Michigan progress toward
a brighter future for all of its youngest citizens.
To join the listserv, go to:
www.greatstartforkids.org or if you do not have internet
access and want to be placed on the Great Start mailing list,
which will provide the same information as the listserv, please
contact Joan Blough, Project Coordinator, at 269-345-5968.
We look forward to your involvement in our strategic planning
for Great Start and appreciate your commitment to and interest
in our youngest citizens.
