Daniel A. Hughes, Ph. D., a premiere leader in understanding the effects of abuse and neglect on childhood development, will be presenting his ideas on how to strengthen parent/child connections, especially with children who have been abused or neglected. Dr. Hughes will explore ways to tap into a parent’s own inner wisdom, allowing them to translate a child’s needs into attachment opportunities. This Parent’s Insight Night is April 3, 2004 from 6 – 9 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, 26355 W. Chicago Rd., Redford, MI 48239. Admission is $15/person, registration required to guarantee a seat. Log onto: www.adoptionparenting.net/page46.html for details and registration form. This event is sponsored by the Attachment COALITION of Michigan. Call: 248-345-2410 or 248-891-8139 or email doris@adoptionparenting.net.

The Attachment COALITION of Michigan, a consortium of psychologists and social workers interested in the healing of abused and neglected children as they integrate into new families through adoption, has brought Dr. Hughes to Michigan for intensive advanced training. While here in Michigan the COALITION decided it would be a great opportunity to introduce Dr. Hughes’ wisdom to the parents of our community to further the understanding of “Creating a Special Place” for the hurt children in our lives. Dr. Hughes is the author of two books, Facilitating Developmental Attachment: The Road to Emotional Recovery and Behavioral Change in Foster and Adopted Children, and Building the Bonds of Attachment: Awakening Love in Deeply Troubled Children. He is currently working on his third. To learn more about Dr. Hughes log onto: www.danielahughes.homestead.com.

More exciting news for families with hurt children… The COALITION and Dr. Hughes are planning a meeting with Harry T. Chugani, M.D. They will explore the opportunity of working together to study the effects of psychotherapeutic interventions on abused and neglected children here in the Detroit Metro area. You may have heard of Dr. Chugani of Children’s Hospital in Detroit. He is the Director of the PET Center, Chief of Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics. He has been featured on many programs over the years, such as, Turning Point, Dateline and 60 Minutes, presenting his research on the effects of abuse and neglect on institutionalized children. You can log onto www.pet.wayne.edu/harrybio.html for more information about Dr. Chugani and his programs.
