Governor
Jennifer Granholm in her State of the State address Tuesday
outlined proposal for new programs to be run by intermediate
school districts around the state. But Rep. Ruth Johnson
(R-Holly) urged the governor in a letter Wednesday to hold off
on some of those programs until she and her committee complete
investigations into some ISD operations.
Ms. Johnson has been investigating the operations of ISDs around
the state since revelations of spending improprieties at Oakland
Schools, which includes her House district.
"While most ISDs are well positioned to help improve educational
achievement in our state, numerous reports by news media, along
with serious issues uncovered by the House Sub-committee on
Intermediate School District Review make it clear that before
entrusting ISDs with additional resources, we must root out
apparent corruption and gross mismanagement at those ISDs
misusing funds meant for educating our children," Ms. Johnson
said in her letter.
Ms. Johnson also renewed her request for State Police assistance
in investigating a number of ISDs.
The State Police and Attorney General Mike Cox are conducting a
criminal investigation into activity at Oakland Schools that
ultimately resulted in the firing of the superintendent, who is
challenging that action in court, and resignations of two of the
five board members, who were not accused of wrongdoing but who
left to discharge concerns that they should have found the
misappropriations.
