The Special Education majors at Eastern Michigan University are required to do a project with a family which includes child/young adult or teen with a special education label. The purpose of this project is for future teachers to learn the complexity of issues families deal with on a daily basis when they have a child with a disability. The project consists of the following steps:

A. Identify a family that includes a child with a disability in their family.
B. Meet with the family a few times in order to:

--Identify family strengths and needs and areas where they may need assistance.

--Observation and report of the child in the educational setting.

--Arrange a time convenient for the family and either (a) accompany the family on an outing or (b) stay with the child in the home with the family present.

--Attend an IEP meeting with the family.

--Assist the family in determining if the IEP meeting was done correctly according to the Michigan Department of Education and/or what should be done differently the next time the family meets with the school.

--Develop a list of potential strengths and needs of the family with the family.

--In collaboration with the family, develop a plan which addresses family/child needs and issues and strengths. Strategies in the plan may address the following:

(a) Improve child’s educational experience

(b) Improve/increase family support systems and/or improve/increase social networks and friendships for the child

The project should be approved by the family, professionally written and worthy of submitting for the students’ or families school records.

For any further information on this project or to become involved contact Dr. Sally Burton-Hoyle, Eastern Michigan University at sburtonh@emich.edu or 734-487-2743.
