Mills Authorizes Two New Charters

Today, the Bay
Mills Community College (BMCC) Board of Regents authorized the
establishment of two new charter schools in Michigan. The Board
also voted to authorize two existing schools.
“These schools were carefully screened and selected from a pool
of 11 new applicants, including four operational charter
schools,” said BMCC President Mickey PARISH. “We believe each
academy is built on a solid foundation of sound educational
research and service-oriented operational approaches. These new
institutions hold remarkable promise.”
New Michigan charter schools authorized this morning were Great
Oaks Academy in Madison Heights and the Academy of Warren. Both
schools are planning to open in fall 2004.
BMCC's Board also voted to oversee charter contracts for the
Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo and Vista Charter Academy
in Grand Rapids. Two other existing charter schools were unable
to receive BMCC authorization during this cycle.
Parish noted that the local boards at each of these existing
academies voted to pursue Bay Mills Community College
authorization earlier this year. In some instances, charter
schools undertake these types of actions in order to take
advantage of a particular authorizer's reputation, contractual
provisions and /or oversight procedures.
“We believe Bay Mills Community College was selected by these
schools because of our growing track record of success relative
to charter school operations and accountability,” Parish said.
“We are building a very solid name for ourselves within the
Michigan charter community.”
Each of the four schools selected will now begin negotiating
final charter contracts with BMCC. The charters will be
effective once these negotiations have been completed and
legally reviewed. BMCC anticipates all necessary work will be
completed this summer.
Bay Mills Community College is an accredited, tribally
controlled college serving both Native American and non-Native
American students across Michigan. BMCC currently oversees 11
schools in Bay City, Belleville, Brimley, Flint, Hamtramck,
Jackson, Mt. Clemens, Pontiac, Southfield, Twin Lake, and
Waterford.
Because it's a tribal college, Bay Mills is not subject to the
state statute that capped the number of charter schools allowed
to operate in Michigan at 150.
