Now Sixth in Immunizations

Michigan
childhood immunization levels jumped nearly 14 percent from 2001
to 2002. With the increase the state is now sixth nationwide in
terms of childhood immunizations.
In 1994, Michigan was rated last in immunizations with an
average of just 61 percent of all children getting their needed
shots before entering school. That set off a statewide
initiative that included then first lady Michelle Engler
encouraging parents to take their children in for their
vaccinations.
With the boost from 2001 to 2002, 81.6 percent of the state's
children have received their immunizations. The national average
is 74.8 percent.
And the Department of Community Health said in a statement that
the immunization levels have been helped by a statewide registry
that allows the state to determine which children are in need of
further vaccinations.
