York City Hires Parent Coordinators

The city's Department of Education has put 1,200 parents and
community members on salary, paying them $30,000 to $39,000 a
year to help improve communication between teachers and parents.
Parent liaisons can be found in many school districts across the
nation, but most of the roles are filled by volunteers and few
districts offer pay.
The New York decision to hire and pay a parent coordinator for
each city school is part of the department's efforts to reform
the nation's largest public school system.
The program is costing the district $43 million, The New York
Times reported in its Saturday editions.
"The question of how much increased parental involvement there
will be is a variable that is very hard for me as chancellor,"
the Times quoted Chancellor Joel Klein as saying. "What I can do
is create the opportunities. And that's what I think we have
done."
The coordinators started work last week ahead of the Tuesday
start to the school year. Officials said about 10,000 people
applied for the openings.
