The Fund provides services and equipment to children with special health care needs that no other resource – including state or federal programs – provides.

The Fund was created in 1944 with a large bequest of Dow Chemical stock by Dr. and Mrs. James Pardee. Dr. Pardee was a co-founder of the Dow Chemical Company.

The Pardees’ gift remains a major portion of the Fund. It has been supplemented by donations made by many other individuals over the past 58 years. This generosity has enabled the Fund to help thousands of families.

The Fund is administered through the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Eligibility

The child must be a Michigan resident to receive benefits from the Fund.

Families with a child enrolled, or medically eligible to enroll, in the Children’s Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) Program may apply to the Children With Special Needs Fund.

To find out if your child is eligible, contact the CSHCS office in your local health department. You can find your local health department under county government in your telephone directory.

Coverage

For eligible recipients, the Fund may provide partial or full funding for the following:

  • Wheelchair ramps into homes

  • Van lifts and tie downs

  • Therapeutic tricycles

  • Air conditioners

  • Adaptive recreational equipment

  • Electrical service upgrades necessitated by the eligible child’s equipment

These are just samples of what the Fund covers. All requests will be considered. A special application is available for a summer camp scholarship up to $500.00.

Application Process

To apply for assistance from the Fund, contact the CSHCS office in your local health department for an application and assistance with the application process. You may also contact the Fund directly at (517) 241-7420, or the CSHCS Family Phone Line at (800) 359-3722.

Documentation

When applying to the Fund, you should provide:

  • Three bids for the requested service or equipment

  • A letter of medical necessity from your child’s managing physician

  • Documentation showing other sources have been contacted for assistance (such as your local service organizations, church, insurance company, etc.)

  • Depending on the nature of the request, you may be asked to provide additional information.
