More About Us
Everyone Together Macomb is a local
network of the Everyone
Together project, which aims to develop 16 parent networks
throughout Michigan to advocate for the inclusion of students with
disabilities in general education settings. Everyone Together is a
joint project of UCP of Michigan, and UCP of Metropolitan Detroit,
which is supported by a grant from the governor appointed, Michigan
Developmental Disabilities Council.
Why Everyone
Together?
The very foundation of public education is to build community—to
learn, as children, how to live, work and play together! The education
research supports that outcomes for ALL students are improved when
students learn together in classrooms.
Is the law supportive of including students
with disabilities?
The federal law of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA) says that a student’s least restrictive environment is the
general education classroom he would attend if he were not disabled.
Part C of the IDEA, the program for infants and toddlers, mandates
that early intervention services and supports be provided in natural
environments, including home and community settings that are natural
or normal for same age peers who have no apparent disability.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states that “no
otherwise qualified” individual with a disability “shall solely by
reason of his [disability], be excluded from participation in…any
program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…”
Title II regulations of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA)
prohibits public entities from discriminating against or excluding
people from programs, services, or activities on the basis of
disability. |
