Inkster Schools
Financial Manager Named
Gongwer News Service, August 8, 2002
W. Howard Morris, former chief financial officer for
the Detroit Public Schools, has been named the financial manager for
the fiscally troubled Inkster Public Schools.
Mr.
Morris, of Detroit, was one of three names submitted to Governor
John Engler by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom
Watkins. Mr. Engler made the appointment, which expires August 8,
2003.
A
financial emergency was declared for the metro Detroit school
district last month.
After
leaving the Detroit schools, Mr. Morris became managing partner of
Prairie & Tireman. He is also a member of the National Association
of Securities Dealers Board of Arbitrators, a former member of the
board of directors of the Michigan Public School Employees
Retirement System, the former secretary-treasurer of the Michigan
State Board of Accountancy and a former board member of the Michigan
Education Trust.
Mr.
Engler said Mr. Morris was "well equipped" to manage the situation
in Inkster.
And Mr.
Watkins said he was glad Mr. Engler moved quickly to appoint Mr.
Morris. "This move will ensure that the children of Inkster will
have the education needs met when the school doors open for the
year.
Mr.
Watkins said it was unfortunate the state had to invoke the state
law on fiscal responsibility for Inkster Schools, but the state was
left with no choice.
