Special Ed Policy to be Discussed
"What's the new IDEA?"
focuses on important changes to special education laws
from the Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan,
September 1, 2002

Changes in special education
law at the federal and state level will be the subject of the
Learning Disabilities Association, Washtenaw County Chapter 's
first program of the school year. Thomas Fleming: National
Teacher of the Year 1992, and member of the President's
Commission on Excellence in Special Education will be joined
by Deborah Canja, Executive Director
of Bridges4Kids and a Michigan advocate for special education;
and Thomas Darnton, an Ann Arbor attorney specializing in
disability law. Panelists will talk about the changes
recommended for reauthorization of IDEA, and implications for
identification, programs, services and evaluations of students
with learning disabilities and related challenges.
Considerations for state and local delivery of special
education programs will also be discussed.
The program will be held at Washtenaw Intermediate School
District (WISD), 1819 S. Wagner Road, on Tuesday, September
10, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The program follows a brief
membership meeting and special election for vice president.
