Schools in 12 cities will receive nearly $11.2 million in federal money to help fund programs for students both before and after school, Governor Jennifer Granholm said Monday.

Making the announcement at a Grand Rapids-area middle school, Ms. Granholm said, "Even in tough economic times, parents, educators and communities believe that preserving funding for before and after-school programs will help to ensure that children in Michigan, especially those at risk, do not fall through the cracks."

Well run programs help improve student's academic achievement, help cut school violence and "empowers families and communities," Ms. Granholm said.

The grants are focused on most the state's urban areas. A total of 10 schools in Detroit will share two separate grants of $1.3 million. Grand Rapids schools will also share $1.3 million. Saginaw schools will get $1.14 million, Highland Park schools will get $1.12 million, and Battle Creek schools will get $1.16 million. Flint Schools will get $1 million and the International Academy of Flint another $42,000.

Over a four-year period the 11 districts will be eligible for a total of $33 million.
