Senate Committees Named, Sikkema Says First Meeting Soon

Members of the Michigan Senate's new standing committees were announced Thursday by Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema (R-Wyoming), and the committees will be ready to begin meeting the week of January 13.

Mr. Sikkema said it is his goal to have the Senate ready to act once it is officially sworn in on January 8, when the 92nd Legislature convenes, and announcing the committee memberships will help meet that goal.

The committees are expected to begin meeting January 13, Mr. Sikkema said. He had already said the Government Operations Committee that he will chair could hold its first appointment hearing on departmental directors of Governor Jennifer Granholm that week.

Mr. Sikkema named the committee chairs last month, and said the committee appointments were assisted by a special committee on committees he had named. "They have provided a great service and have made the transition to a new Republican majority smoother and more efficient."

The committees and their members follow. Majority Republicans (who have a one-member majority on each committee except for the 10-6 advantage on Appropriations) are listed in Roman type, with the first named person the chair and the second named the majority vice-chair. Democrats are in Italic type, with the first person named the minority vice-chair.
