The Autism Tissue Program (ATP) has come a long way since it was first launched five years ago. The program, which is a joint effort of the Autism Society of America Foundation, the National Alliance for Autism Research, and the MIND Institute, provides a registry of individuals who have agreed to donate their brains to science after their death.

Since its inception, ATP has acquired over 4,500 registrants and 58 donors. In addition, the program, which matches researchers with registrants, has approved 31 projects to date. However, according to scientists, critical basic research is still lagging behind because of a scarcity of brain tissue for autism research. What is learned about neurodevelopment can be applied to day-to-day educational programs to make the most of developmental periods

Registering to donate brain tissue does not mean that you expect your child to die an early death. It does mean, however, that you are prepared to act if such an unexpected and unfortunate event were to occur. Brain tissue donation reflects an individual’s or family’s decision to make the choice to benefit others and honors the complex and challenging life of the affected donors.
