Overall toxic chemicals released in the state increased by about 2 percent between 2001 and 2002, according to a report issued Tuesday by the Department of Environmental Quality.

The department Tuesday released the annual Toxic Chemical Release Inventory, a compilation of all of the toxic chemicals released in the state by various industrial sources.

The report showed 135 million pounds of chemicals were released into the state's land, air and water.

Releases to the land generated the increase, with the 75 million pounds of chemicals disposed of on land in 2002 representing a 5 percent increase from 2001. Some 80 percent of those materials were disposed of in landfills.

Air releases, at 56 million pounds, held steady from the prior year.

Water discharges fell 20 percent to 830,000 pounds for 2002.

Another 321 million pounds of toxic chemicals were recycled, burned for energy or treated off-site.
