Teachers wanting to know what the state expects from them will
be able refer to a 62-page document if it's approved by the
state Board of Education.
Department of Education (MDE) staff presented to the board today
a draft of the Professional Standards for Michigan Teachers (PSMT),
which the Board is expected to approve at its May 13 meeting.
The document is designed to "reflect a coherent, seamless
preparation of a high quality teacher and to promote
substantive, classroom-based professional development during
induction" according to a memo from state Superintendent Mike
FLANAGAN to board members.
The new document, an updated version of the old Entry-Level
Standards for Michigan Teachers, makes substantial changes from
the original standards. Language was added or deleted in nearly
every section of the rules.
The standards stress teachers take continuing education to
"demonstrate continued growth" in their subject area, as well as
the teaching profession as a whole.
Bonnie ROCKAFELLOW, of MDE's Office of Professional Preparation
Services, said the new standards would "provide a continuum of
teacher's knowledge and skills across levels of certification"
and make more visible the preparation for instruction of all
students including students with special needs.
In short, Rockafellow said teachers should be prepared "to
handle all learners all the time."
At its May meeting the Board is also expected to approve
revisions to the Educational Technology Endorsement that will
ensure teachers who earn the endorsement have advanced skills
related to teaching and learning in online environments.
Rockafellow said the aim is to "have a technology guru in every
school building."
