Watkins Names New Chief Academic Officer

from MIRS, August 27, 2002

State Superintendent Tom WATKINS today announced the appointment of Jeremy HUGHES as the Department of Education's new Chief Academic Officer.

Hughes is currently director of the Office of Educational Assessment and Michigan Merit Award, which includes the management of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Hughes replaces William BUSHAW who announced his resignation in June of this year.

“We are very pleased to have such an outstanding and dedicated academic leader as Dr. Hughes accept the role as the state's Chief Academic Officer,” Watkins said. “This role encompasses everything that he loves about education – curriculum and instruction – and he will be invaluable as we all continue to work toward making Michigan's public schools a national model of success.”

Hughes will begin his new role Oct. 1. He will spend the next month in a transition role between the Department of Education and the Department of Treasury.
